Description

Union general (1826–1885) hailed at the beginning of the Civil War as the 'Young Napoleon,' who was defeated for the presidency in 1864 by Abraham Lincoln. ALS, one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. Handwritten letter to Major J. E. Montgomery. In part: “I received Mrs. Montgomery’s kind note on my return this evening. I am very sorry to learn of your continued illness, the more so as it will deprive me of the satisfaction of having your services…I expect to leave the city on Monday evening for a few days, so that it is very necessary for me to make other arrangements at once. Mrs. McClellan unites with me in kindest regards to Mrs. Montgomery & yourself." In fine condition, with a thin strip of toning along the left edge.
