Soldier and businessman (1831-1916) who was a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. In postwar years he was a railroad executive who helped direct the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Partly-printed DS, signed “G. M. Dodge, Pt.,” one page, 11.5 x 7.75, September 25, 1880. Stock certificate for 100 shares in the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company issued to Whillingham & Washburn, signed in ink by Dodge as president and countersigned by the company's secretary. Matted and framed to an overall size of 28 x 16. In fine condition.
