Description

American military officer and politician (1798-1879) who served as a Union general during the Civil War, in which capacity he played a pivotal role in suppressing the New York Draft Riots in July 1863. His political and diplomatic career included posts as secretary of the treasury, minister to France, and governor of New York. LS signed “John A. Dix,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Union Pacific Rail Road Company letterhead, October 2, 1866. Letter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, in full: "It will afford the Directors of this Company much pleasure if you can accept the enclosed invitation, and if the ladies of your family will accompany you, no effort will be spared to make them comfortable." Includes the printed Union Pacific invitation inviting Welles to attend the celebration of "the completion of their Road from Omaha, Nebraska Territory, westward to the 1000th meridian of longitude." In fine condition.
