Son of Daniel Webster who served as a Union colonel during the Civil War and was killed in action at the Second Battle of Bull Run (1818-1862). Two ALSs, totaling four pages on two sheets, January 31 and February 13, 1855. The first, in part: "I received your favor this morning, having returned from Washington last night. I shall be glad to receive the copy of the book you mention & you may rely upon my keeping it in petto, till the proper time. You will find orders enough for it, I am confident from Boston & the North." The second, in part: "Two or three days after the receipt of your previous kind note, the book came to hand. I suppose that I may now show it; I have, as you requested, kept it quite close. I think it must have a powerful effect on the public mind." In overall fine condition, with a bit of loss to the edge of the later letter.
