Tompkins,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, April 26, 1813. Handwritten letter to the Secretary of the Navy William Jones, in part: "Peter Wise of this City aged twenty five years is anxious to become a midshipman or to obtain an appointment in the Corps of Marines He is a gentleman of good character and of a military and patriotic disposition. He has had a brother impressed into the service of the British & detained nine years. After his liberation he entered the Chesapeake but has recently died in the service of the United States. The brother now recommended appears very anxious to avenge the wrongs his brother has suffered and at the same time to serve his Country. Should there be a vacancy for either of the above appointments I beg leave to recommend him as worthy and well qualified." In fine condition.
