Description

Sherman requests back issues of The Century magazine

ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one page, 5 x 8, 912 Garrison Avenue letterhead, December 8, 1885. Letter to the editor of Century Magazine, in full: "In overhauling my back numbers for Binding—I find missing the numbers for August and September, 1885.—Please send them to me by mail—and charge to me—whenever my account approaches bottom notify me & I will respond promptly." In fine condition, with light toning to the perimeter. In 1883, The Century magazine began running short accounts from major Civil War figures. Among the series contributors were Union generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, and George B. McClellan, as well as Confederate generals James Longstreet and P. G. T. Beauregard. The popularity of these columns stretched the initial 12-month run date to three years, and prompted readers who served in the war to send in their own stories, with the submissions growing so numerous that The Century created an additional section entitled ‘Memoranda on the Civil War.’
