Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of the much-anthologized “Thanatopsis.” Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolitionist and a founder of the Republican Party. ALS signed “Wm. C. Bryant,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 7.5, personal letterhead, November 12, 1874. Letter to a woman who submitted writing on Bryant’s birthday. In part: “Your verses should have had a better subject, but I thank you for them. They are only too complimentary. But I do not see how I can send them for insertion in the Evening Post since the multitude of poems on my late birthday has been so great that they could not be published in that journal without causing just complaint on the part of the reader.” In very good condition, with tape reinforcement on reverse of intersecting mailing folds, overall toning, and light chipping to top edge. Bryant’s writing remains crisp and bold. RRAuction COA.
