ALS, one page, 7.25 x 8.25, January 21, 1824. Jackson, then a senator from Tennessee, writes to the Secretary of the Navy. In full: “The enclosed letter just recd. from Mrs. Sterett the mother of the young gentleman for whom I solicited the other day; the appointment of midshipman in the Navy of the United States: I lay it before you; as it will afford you information of his education, experience, & fitness for such appointment; with a hope, that when you take up the subject of appointments, he may claim your early attention….” As the presidential vote in the following November was split four ways, the election went to the House of Representatives. Though Jackson had won a plurality of the popular vote, the House selected John Quincy Adams in a decision Jackson famously characterized as a “corrupt bargain.” Matted and framed with an antique portrait print to an overall size of 21 x 16.25. Intersecting folds (partial separations; two vertical folds to signature, one evidently with a separation reinforced from reverse), seal-related loss to left margin (away from signature), and faint show-though of docket behind first name, otherwise very good, bright condition.
