Manuscript DS as president, one page, 9.75 x 13.75, July 14, 1832. President Jackson appoints John H. Wheeler “Clerk to the commission under the law to carry into effect the Convention between the United States and his Majesty the King of the French, concluded on the fourth of July 1831.” Signed at the conclusion by Jackson, and countersigned by Secretary of State Edward Livingston. On July 4, 1831, France and the United States reached a settlement on claims on shipping attacks by both countries. France would pay 25 million francs to the United States for claims due; while the United States would pay 1.5 million francs to settle French claims. Also, France would forfeit its claim to most-favored-nation treatment at the port of New Orleans, in exchange for lower duties on imported French wine. Moderate toning from old tape reinforcement on reverse along intersecting storage folds, trimmed right edge, some scattered toning and soiling, and some minor paper loss along top edge, otherwise very good condition.
