Description

Alexander Calder

Innovative American sculptor (1898–1976) best known for devising the mobile, the form with which he was most closely associated. Calder also produced large-scale, immobile abstract sculptures known as stabiles, many of which were designed for public spaces. Five ALS, all signed “Sandy,” various length and formats (including three postcards), all to art critic and historian Selden Rodman, 1959-1967. The longest letter reads in part: “Braziller had Andrew Ritchie ... but the latter came to lunch (very late) one day, about then, and I must have told him that J. J. Soreeney was doing one for Abrams (nothing has ever been done about this, however) and he immediately threw in the sponge. I’ve been on & off with Braziller, now & then, and I doubt that he has anybody in mind. I rather expect to see him on Thursday 23 Feb. We expect a few friends to dine with us that evening.... So why don’t you try to come there too. On March (24) we fly to Rio, for Carnaval (not Ike) and expect to be gone 2 weeks return 7 Mar.... We also have another amigo in Cuernavaca—Mathias Goeritz —who invited me to come & do something for the Olympics. The model is already there, probably, being worked on, in advance of our arrival....” In very good condition overall, with heavy pencil notations to one letter, scattered creases and folds, and moderate creasing and damp staining to one postcard.
