Description

Thomas Carlyle

Influential Scottish-born Victorian philosopher, essayist, and historian (1795–1881). ALS signed “T. Carlyle,” one page both sides, 5 x 8.5, January 27, 1853. Carlyle writes to B. B. Woodward. In part: “Accept many thanks for your massive and splendid volume on the History of Wales, which arrived safe last night, according to your kind premonition and intention. I know nothing of Wales history … and am happy to have access to surer and fuller information on the subject. The book seems to abound in curious knowledge, and is full of illustrations. I should think it must be welcome to a great many readers. I wish you heartily well thro’ your next enterprise, the Opus Major, and more and more success in turning to account, for yourself and your fellow creatures, the gift you have got. With many thanks for your kindness to me in particular….” In very good to fine condition, with slight trimming to edges, intersecting folds (tape reinforcement to one fold on reverse), a few tears and partial separations (tape repairs), tiny chip to one corner, mild toning and handling wear, and faint show-through of ink, no faults materially affecting the appearance. The writing is clear and dark throughout. RRAuction COA.
