Writing to the South Carolina senate, a month before his death, on the resignation of an eminent engineer

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina (1749–1800). ALS, one page, 6.75 x 4.5, December 7, 1799. Rutledge writes to “Mr. President & Gentlemen of the Senate.” In full: “I herewith transmit to you a copy of a letter, which I received from Colonel Senf, containing his resignation as engineer of this state.” Among other projects as engineer, Swedish-born John Christian Senf (1750–1806) oversaw construction of the Santee Canal. Matted and framed with a portrait and engraved plaque to an overall size of 13 x 20. Faint horizontal fold (affecting no text), otherwise fine, fresh condition.
