Former slave (1767–1820) who rose through the ranks of Haiti’s military to eventually became that country’s president and, ultimately, king. As discontent with his feudal attitudes reached a breaking point, he committed suicide by shooting himself with a silver bullet. Ink signature, “Henri,” on an off-white 3.5 x 1.25 slip clipped from a letter or document and affixed to a slightly larger slip. Slight show-through from writing on reverse and trimming to edges slightly touching top edge of signature and affecting his distinctive oversized paraph, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
