Description

“There has been a most lamentable delinquency among both the collectors and distributors ... of the public money”

Distinguished statesman and three-time presidential candidate (1777–1852) who became known as the Great Compromiser for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 12.25, August 10, 1819. Clay writes to John Coburn in Maysville, Kentucky, describing a Mr. Smith (who will assess Coburn’s application) as a “vigilant and active officer,” adding that “there has been a most lamentable delinquency among both the collectors and distributors (more particularly the latter) of the public money.” In good condition, with folds (touching signature) and allover wrinkling, mild toning and soiling, faint show-through from seal remnant and mounting tape on reverse, and small loss to bottom edge (well away from writing). The writing is clear throughout. R&R COA.
