Soldier and explorer (1770–1838) who, with Meriwether Lewis, undertook a two-year expedition in 1804 to discover a navigable route to the Pacific Ocean, in the process exploring and later describing much of the course along the Missouri River. A document issued to “The Contracter,” ordering “Provision return for 8 Chickasaw Indians for one day…rations commencing and ending the 4th of June 1794.” Endorsement underneath from John Mills reads, “Will please to issue twelve complete rations on the above.” DS, signed “W. Clark, Lieut.,” one page, 8 x 5.5, June 4, 1794. In fine condition, with a bit of mild toning and light storage folds. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the regular Army in 1792 and was assigned to Anthony Wayne’s Legion of the United States, where he served a four-year tour and participated in the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
