Description

As twenty-three-year-old military historian: “My book [on the River War] will be published at the end of the month”

ALS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, October 3, 1899. Churchill writes to Colonel Rogers. In part: “I return to you herewith the very valuable notes on the Transport and Supply Department of the Egyptian Army, which you were so kind as to write for me and of which I have made a great use: “My book [The River War: An Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan] will be published at the end of this month—but I shall not see it as I am off to the Cape.” Though technically a non-combatant, Churchill made headlines during his trip to the Cape in November 1899 with his daring rescue of an armored train which came under Boer fire, resulting in his capture by the Boers. Churchill incorporated the notes supplied by Rogers into chapter eight of his book. Bends to two corners (one touching Churchill’s surname), vertical fold touching signature, and a few very faint scattered spots, otherwise fine, bright condition. An exceptionally early and interesting example. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
