Factory Point National Bank check, 8.5 x 3, filled out and signed by Robert Todd Lincoln, "R. T. Lincoln," payable to J. O. Middlebrook & Sons, July 19, 1917, also signed below by his grandson, "Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith." In fine condition.
Robert Todd Lincoln (1843-1926) was the only son of President Abraham Lincoln to live to adulthood. He was a successful lawyer, and became President of the Pullman Company. He and his wife, Mary Harlan Lincoln, built an impressive summer estate named, 'Hildene,' outside of Manchester Vermont, in the Green Mountains, where this check was written.
Robert's grandson and the great grandson of the president, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith (1904-1985) was the last surviving descendant of President Lincoln. He was the son of Robert's daughter, Jessie Harlan Lincoln and Warren W. Beckwith, having met at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the hometown of Mary Harlan Lincoln. Early on Beckwith was not especially interested in his ancestral life, but later he took a stronger interest in being related to Abraham Lincoln, especially as he was invited to participate in commemorative events in the late 1950s and early 1960s remembering Lincoln's life and the centennial of the Civil War. Having access to the family home, 'Hildene,' he took possession of various family items from his ancestors to donate to institutions along with selling items to dealers. It is most likely that during this period he added his name to this check written by his grandfather, Robert T. Lincoln. Beckwith's signature is rare, especially when it is coupled with his grandfather's signature as on this check.
