Description

Steinbeck replies to compliments on Travels with Charley: "Anyone who says he doesn't like a pat on the head is either untruthful or a fool"

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, March 14, 1963. Letter to Norman S. Beier in New York City. In part: "Thank you ever so much for your very nice letter….I was pleased to learn that you and Mrs. Beier derived so much enjoyment from 'Travels with Charley.' Anyone who says he doesn't like a pat on the head is either untruthful or a fool." In fine condition, with some light creasing and a mounting strip to the top edge of the reverse.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America was Steinbeck's humorous travelogue documenting a 1960 trip he took with his French poodle, Charley, across the United States in a specially made camper—a trip encompassing nearly 10,000 miles. The book was published by Viking in 1962.
