American statesman (1794–1865) renowned for his oratory, best remembered for giving the speech preceding Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Partly-printed DS as Governor of Massachusetts, one page, 10.25 x 16.25, February 4, 1837. Governor Everett appoints Ephraim Buttrick as “one of our Justices of the Peace and of the Quorum, within and for the County of Middlesex for and during the term of seven years.” Signed neatly in the upper left by Edward Everett below an embossed seal, and countersigned by John P. Bigelow as secretary of the Commonwealth. In fine condition, with faint toning along the intersecting folds.
