Description

"A memento of our historic trip"—postcards from Richard Nixon's historic 1972 trip to China

Letter signed "RN" and "Pat," one page on a 5.75 x 4 postcard depicting the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre in Beijing, postmarked at Beijing, China, February 25, 1972. Postcard sent from China to Dr. and Mrs. Victor C. DeLuccia of Yonkers, New York, initialed by President Richard Nixon and boasting a handwritten message from First Lady Pat Nixon, in full: "This card comes as a memento of our historic trip. Our best as always." Additionally includes two postcards with autograph letters signed by Rose Mary Woods, secretary to President Nixon, sending "Greetings from Peking" and ensuring their receipt of "a card from this historic meeting place." In fine condition.

Nixon's seven-day official visit to the People's Republic of China in late February 1972 marked the first time a U.S. president had visited the PRC. His arrival in Beijing ended 25 years of no communication or diplomatic ties between the two countries and was the key step in normalizing relations between the U.S. and China. A marvelous lot representing one of the world-changing diplomatic events of the 20th century.
