Limited edition color satin-finish 16 x 20 outtake print from the shoot for the front of Janis Joplin's 1971 album Pearl, showing the celebrated blues-rock vocalist seated on an antique sofa with feathers in her hair, hand on chin. Signed and titled on the reverse in black felt tip by the photographer, "Barry Feinstein, Janis Joplin, (Pearl), Hollywood, California, 1970, 3/10." In very fine condition. This limited edition print was created for a gallery and kept by Feinstein for his personal collection.
Pearl represented Janis Joplin's farewell—it was released in January 1971, three months after her death on October 4th. The album cover featured a slightly different image from Feinstein's shoot, showing Joplin similarly positioned on the Victorian loveseat, but with a drink in hand. The photo session took place in Hollywood on October 3rd, the day before her tragic overdose.
From the personal collection of Barry Feinstein and accompanied by a letter of authenticity from his estate. Barry Feinstein passed away in 2011, and since then his estate has offered posthumous estate stamped limited edition photographs from his archives; this example, printed during his lifetime and deriving from his personal collection, is superior to those gallery offerings.
