Description

Words of comfort from President Johnson—"It is clear that you have given this gallant young Marine his courage and his convictions"

Vietnam War-dated TLS as president, one page, 6.5 x 9.75, White House letterhead, March 1, 1967. Letter to Harry Clayman of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, whose son, Stanley David Clayman, had recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, in full: “I am glad that you let your heart guide your hand into writing me. It is my hope that I may return to you and Mrs. Clayman some measure of the strength and comfort your letter brought me. All the pride and gratitude that your President and the overwhelming majority of your countrymen feel for your son must reach beyond him to embrace both of you. It is clear that you have given this gallant young Marine his courage and his convictions. Now he is extending them to all mankind, reaching them out as protection and hope to all the human family. That is a precious gift to bestow. I am deeply grateful for your selflessness and pray that your sacrifice will be rewarded by a happy reunion in a world at peace. My own determination to assure that day is greater for your kindness and encouragement.” Matted and framed with a portrait of LBJ to an overall size of 21.75 x 16. In very fine condition. An eloquent message of hope from President Johnson whose words of optimism ultimately rang true for the Claymans. As a helicopter pilot, Stanley David Clayman flew many dangerous missions, rescued many stranded soldiers in untenable positions and earned the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Medal (17 awards), National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross (2 awards) and rose to the rank of Captain. At the end of his tour of duty, he joined his father in business in Bangor, Maine.
