Description

President Johnson forwards a "letter to the Queen of Great Britain & Ireland" concerning the recall of diplomat Charles Francis Adams

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, March 23, 1868. President Johnson directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “the envelope of my letter to the Queen of Great Britain & Ireland (Recall of Mr. Adams).” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. The document is affixed by its left edge to a backing sheet and in fine condition.

The son and grandson of Presidents John Quincy Adams and John Adams, Charles Francis Adams, Sr. was a historical editor, writer, politician, and diplomat (1807–1886) who served as the United States Minister to the United Kingdom during the American Civil War. During his diplomatic tenure, which lasted from May 16, 1861, to May 13, 1868, Adams was crucial to Union efforts to prevent British recognition of the Confederate States of America and maintain European neutrality to the utmost extent. He was also instrumental in resolving the Trent Affair in 1861, which occurred when two Confederate envoys, James Murray Mason and John Slidell, were removed from the British mail packet RMS Trent by the U.S. Navy during the Civil War; their capture was protested vigorously by the British government and threatened a war between the United States and Great Britain.
