Three World War II-dated TLSs from Herbert Hoover, each one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, each addressed from the Waldorf Astoria and sent to Lieutenant John Burke of the United States Naval Reserve. The earliest letter, December 3, 1941, in part: “I am no longer taking an active part in politics. I am anxious to see the Republican Party preserved for its function in opposition and as an alternative to revolution. For your purpose, you need to recruit more active persons.” The second letter, October 1, 1943, in full: “I have received from George your memorandums on the natives of the Solomons and other evidences of your continued mental activities. It was good to know that you are still going strong. We are all solicitous for your welfare. When you return, you will find much to be done.” The last letter, January 17, 1945, in full: “I have your note of the eleventh. And the next time you are to be in New York, please telephone my office and we can arrange a time that will be mutually convenient. Good luck for the New Year.” In his own hand, Hoover adds “With Kind Regards,” to the valediction of the 1941 letter. In overall very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining and soiling. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the 1945 letter.
