Noteworthy military commission from President Van Buren, approving the first career appointment of Henry Jackson Hunt, the Civil War’s foremost artillery tactician and strategist

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “M. Van Buren,” one page, 13.75 x 17.75, February 20, 1840. President Van Buren appoints Henry J. Hunt as a “Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillery in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Martin Van Buren, and countersigned by Secretary of War Joel R. Poinsett. The embossed white War Department seal remains affixed to the upper left. In fine condition. Henry Jackson Hunt served as Chief of Artillery in the Army of the Potomac (1819-1889) during the American Civil War. Considered by many as the greatest artillery tactician and strategist of the war, Hunt’s tactics affected the outcome of many important battles, including Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.
