Description

Mailing envelope from the “Department of State,” 5.5 x 3.5, addressed in another hand to “Mr. Samuel Bailey, et al., Weymouth, Massachusetts,” and signed above with his franking signature, “M. Van Buren.” Postmarked "Free" at Washington on November 20, [no year]; given that the envelope was sent from the State Department, it seems plausible that Van Buren signed it during his tenure as Secretary of State, which indicates that the year was either 1829 or 1830. In very good to fine condition, with light toning and soiling, and a short tear to the top edge.
