"Relentless Death has deprived me, recently, of my beloved Mother"

Civil War-dated ALS signed “Julia Gardiner Tyler,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered stationery, January 23, 1865. Addressed from “Castleton Hill” on Staten Island, a handwritten letter to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, requesting that she be allowed to send some of her possessions to her home in New York, in part: “I am anxious to receive your permission to obtain from Richmond, per Flag of Truce boat, a few boxes, not large, containing property of my own which I wish to collect about me for my comfort & convenience. It consists of table silver, portraits, & my private papers. Relentless Death has deprived me, recently, of my beloved Mother. Her home has become my home, & will continue to be for the future, my place of residence.” In fine condition.
