Description

Infamous French courtesan (1743-1793) who was the last mistress of Louis XV. Accused of aiding emigres from the Revolution, she was imprisoned, tried, and executed during the Reign of Terror. LS in French, signed “la Comtesse du Barry,” one page, 4.5 x 7, March 1776. Untranslated letter to S. Allegrain regarding the purchase of a marble statue by M. Buffault; Allegrain's reply is penned on the reverse. In fine condition, with scattered soiling, and light show-through from additional writing on the reverse.
