Description

Douglas writes to Lewis Cass on the 1856 presidential campaign

Eminent American senator and statesman (1813-1861), dubbed the 'Little Giant,' perhaps best remembered for his role in the Lincoln-Douglas debates during the 1858 campaign for the Senate race in Illinois. ALS signed “S. A. Douglas,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, September 12, 1856. Handwritten letter to General Lewis Cass regarding the 1856 presidential campaign, urging his appearance in Springfield. In full: "I have just arrived here from Chicago and that the whole city is filled with enthusiasm in [anticipation] of your presence here next Tuesday. Under some misapprehension notices were given and widely circulated that you have accepted the invitation and would certainly be present. The disappointment will be very great and will injure us very much if you do not come. I hope, under the circumstances you will forego your appointment at Saganons, and come at once. I will come to Michigan on any day in October you may name and make at least two speeches in return. My D[ea]r. Genl., Don’t disappoint us for there will be an immense meeting, and the people will all come to see you. Mr. Hephon goes as a special messenger to accompany you." Docketed on the reverse by Cass: "1856, Sep. 12, St. Douglas." In fine condition.
