Description

Glenn cites Rudyard Kipling, explains how his “lifelong habit of reading” prepared him for “our nation's space program”

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal United States Senate letterhead, January 6, 1994. Letter to Martha Nieder, in full: “Thank you for asking me to participate in ‘Share a Book Month’ at your school. Reading has always been important in my life. When I was very young, one of my favorite stories was ‘The Elephant's Child’ from Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling. What I liked about that story was that the young elephant was curious about everything and sought answers anyplace he could find them. If the elephant's child had been able to read, he might have saved himself a lot of trouble. My lifelong habit of reading to find answers to my questions helped me to be ready when the opportunity came for me to be in our nation's space program. I hope that each of you will get into the habit of reading to learn more about the world around you so that when your opportunity comes to do something exciting, you will be ready.” In very fine condition.
