Description

Queen Elizabeth awards painter William Crosbie with a diploma from the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture

Rare partly-printed vellum DS, signed “Elizabeth R.,” one page, 19.5 x 14.75, December 24, 1974. Diploma from the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, which approves the election of William Crosbie as an “Academician…in consideration of his eminent talents as a Painter.” Signed prominently at the conclusion by Queen Elizabeth II, and countersigned by academy officials. The document retains its unusual blue ribbon and ‘canister’ seal. In very good to fine condition, with a light stain, and scattered small holes to the top blank area.

William Crosbie was a Scottish painter (1915–1999) considered among the finest and most singular Scottish painters of the twentieth century. His paintings hang in all the major museums and galleries in Scotland as well as the Royal Collection and the British Museum in London, and in private collections throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
