Description

American novelist (1892–1977) best known as the author of such crime/noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. TLS signed “Jim,” one page, 6 x 9.25, Hotel Lincoln (New York) letterhead, September 10, 1953. Letter to “Eddie,” his agent Edgar Carter, who works in the office of H. N. Swanson, in full: “Witt says he sent the Kenley check, covering Barnesville, a long time ago. I asked him to start a postoffice tracer, and I suppose he will. In the mean time, if there is an inquiry you could start on your end, that might help. I guess I believe this, but it seems passing odd that a 1st class envelope, with thick enclosure such as check & boxoffice returns, should just vanish, even if he misdirected it somehow.

He is a competent, apparently honest man of great ability, but with one annoying German trait: an obsession to smooch small chores off people, such as getting me to ride himself & wife from Newark to Norwich, Conn.—a dreadful day, pleasant though the wife turned out to be. He lacks adequate secretarial service, trying to do things himself, and letting clients' lawyer do them, too. Result: God's masterpiece in the way of a well-intentioned pest. Some of that, I think, bears on Barnesville. If you can find it, thank.” In fine condition.
