Brother of American Express co-founder William Fargo, J. C. Fargo (1829-1915) served as a president of American Express for 30 years and pioneered the development of traveler's cheques. Partly-printed DS, signed "Jas. C. Fargo," one page, 14.5 x 9, January 2, 1873. Stock certificate for 150 shares in the Merchants Despatch Transportation Co., signed in ink by James C. Fargo as the company's president, and countersigned by its treasurer and secretary. The original receipt remains affixed to the left edge. Impressively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and plaque to an overall size of 24.75 x 26. In fine condition.
