Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17 x 14, August 23, 1886. President Cleveland appoints George F. Thorpe as “Postmaster at Westport, in the County of Fairfield, State of Connecticut.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by both Grover Cleveland and Postmaster General William F. Vilas. The original gold Post Office Department seal with green ribbon remains affixed to the lower left corner. In fine condition, with some light staining. George F. Thorpe (1832-1910), a Connecticut native, was a house carpenter who served four years as Postmaster at Westport. Postal records show he made $1,100 a year in the government job. His daughter, Jennie, also worked in that post office.
