Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “J. Q. Adams,” one page, 15.25 x 9.25, April 5, 1825. President Adams grants Wedworth Wadsworth of Middlesex County, Connecticut, a parcel of land in the "Michigan Territory, Containing one hundred and twenty six acres." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President John Quincy Adams, and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office George Graham. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains fully intact. In fine condition.

Wadsworth (1782-1860) was a respected farmer in the Middlesex County village of Durham. He and his first wife Content Scranton Wadsworth had several sons. Son James later served as Mayor of Buffalo, NY, and as a NY State Senator. James’ son Wedworth (named after his grandfather) was an accomplished landscape artist in New York City. The Wadsworth family ancestors were among the earliest New England settlers.
