Description

Rubenstein on memorizing music: "A hundred years ago musicians performed with a score. Since Liszt it became a fashion to play by memory"

Piano virtuoso known especially for his interpretations of Chopin (1887–1982). TLS, one page, 6.25 x 8.5, February 20, 1965. Letter to Rosagitta Podrovsku, in full: "Your request for my assistance with your research paper about Memorization is a difficult problem for me. I am just now in the midst of a very strenuous tour. I am playing almost every second day, and really have no time to give you any ideas about memorization. I can tell you only, from a simple point of view, that a good memory is a special gift, independent of musical talent. I have known great musicians without memory, and very poor ones with an astonishing one. A hundred years ago musicians performed with a score. Since Liszt it became a fashion to play by memory. Some artists, like Dame Myra Hess, and others I know of, gave their concerts with the music. I shouldn't give much importance to the fact of having a good memory or not. It is certainly useful, for all purposes, but I doubt if it can be actually learned. In my opinion, it is simply a gift." In fine condition, with light edge toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
