Description

Union general (1805-1871) in command of Fort Sumter who refused a formal demand for his surrender, leading to the bombardment of the fort and start of the Civil War. Uncommon and highly desirable 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Anderson in profile, neatly signed in ink, "Robert Anderson, Br. Gen’l., USA.” Reverse bears a Brinckerhoff’s stamp. In fine condition.

Anderson's actions in defense of Fort Sumter made him an immediate national hero. He was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army, effective May 15, 1961. Anderson took the fort's 33-star flag with him to New York City, where he participated in a Union Square patriotic rally that was the largest public gathering in North America until then.
