Union general (1824–1863) in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War who was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Desirable unsigned Civil War–era 2.5 x 3.75 carte-de-visite portrait of Hiram G. Berry in uniform, striking an unflinching seated pose in his Union frock coat. Published by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, from a “Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery,” with two-cent revenue stamp applied to the reverse. The stamp allows us to date the CDV to circa 1864–1866, when the 'Sun Picture Tax' was in effect—passed by Congress as a means to finance the ongoing war between the states. In fine condition, with a trimmed bottom edge and pencil identification notation to the reverse.
