Description

Desirable full free frank as Secretary of State, measuring 10 x 8 unfolded with a central panel of 5 x 3.25, addressed in Monroe's hand to "Dr. Charles Everett, Charlottesville," and franked in the upper right, "Dep't of State, Jas. Monroe." Postmarked "Free" at Washington on May 27, [no year, c. 1811–1816]. Annotated along the edge: "Respecting his Brother Joseph." In fine condition, with light soiling and a central vertical fold.

Dr. Charles Everett, a planter and physician from Albemarle County, Virginia, was a physician to three American presidents: Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison. He also served twice in the Virginia House of Delegates, and acted as Monroe's private secretary during part of his presidency. The two remained close, corresponding until Monroe's death in 1831.
