Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, March 24, 1885. President Cleveland directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the envelope of the letter recalling Mr. James R. Lowell from his post as American Minister at London.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.
James Russell Lowell was an American Romantic poet, editor, abolitionist, and diplomat (1819–1891) who is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers that also included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. He received his first political appointment, the ambassadorship to the Kingdom of Spain, in 1877, and was later appointed as the Minister to England in 1880. Queen Victoria commented that she had never seen an ambassador who ‘created so much interest and won so much regard as Mr. Lowell.’ Lowell held this role until the close of Chester A. Arthur's presidency in the spring of 1885.
