Description

Unique archive of papers from the World War I military service of Pvt. Mark Haskell, highlighted by his original copy of John J. Pershing's General Orders No. 38-A, featuring the commander's facsimile signature, one page, 8 x 10.5, February 28, 1919, thanking the soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces for their service during WWI, in part: "Now that your service with the American Expeditionary Forces is about to terminate, I can not let you go without a personal word. At the call to arms, the patriotic young manhood of America eagerly responded and became the formidable army whose decisive victories testify to its efficiency and its valor. With the support of the nation firmly united to defend the cause of liberty, our army has executed the will of the people with resolute purpose. Our democracy has been tested, and the forces of autocracy have been defeated. To the glory of the citizen-soldier, our troops have faithfully fulfilled their trust, and in a succession of brilliant offensives have overcome the menace to our civilization."

Additionally includes Haskell's Third Army motor vehicle permit authorizing him to use an Indian motorcycle, an IV Army Corps meal pass, a 1919 "Duty Status Leave" card granting permission to visit Aix-les-Bains, a mimeographed 1919 letter of thanks to the IV Army Corps by Charles Pelot Summerall, a 1919 identification card, a troop billet, and two postcards home (one imprinted with the confirmation: "The ship on which I sailed has arrived safely overseas"). In overall very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and overall creasing to the general orders.
