Description

The ‘Battle Hymn’ author recalls a meeting “at an exhibition of the first Daguerreotypes which were seen in this country”

Author, suffragette, dramatist, poet, and biographer (1819-1910), best remembered as the lyricist of 'Battle Hymn of the Republic.' ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Buffalo, September 12, 1887. Handwritten letter to Mr. Tickering, in part: "I remember your grandfather with great pleasure. I met him at a small party made for my elders, on the occasion of a visit to Boston, when I was sixteen years old. Mr. Tickering was kind enough to notice me, and to make a very pleasant mention of 'Miss Ward' to my then tutor, Mr. Cogswell, once Master of Round Hill School. I remember meeting him again at an exhibition of the first Daguerreotypes which were seen in this country." In fine condition, with some subtle foxing and binding holes to hinge. Howe's second meeting would have to have occurred in the early 1840s, when Samuel Morse introduced daguerreotypes in the United States, with millions per year being produced into the 1850s.
