Description

President Arthur sends his felicitations "to the Czar of Russia" on the news of his son's marriage

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, October 1, 1884. President Arthur directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the Envelope of my letter of congratulations sent to the Czar of Russia, in reply to his announcement of the marriage of His Imperial Highness, the Grand Duke Sergius Alexandrovitch, with the Princess Elisabeth Alexandra Louise Alice of Hesse.” Signed prominently at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur. In fine condition, with a light diagonal crease passing through the signature.

The wedding ceremony of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia and Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine took place at the Chapel of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 15, 1884. Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich was the fifth son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, and Princess Elisabeth of Hesse and by Rhine was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Sergei was famously assassinated at the age of 47 by a terrorist bomb at the Kremlin during the 1905 Russian Revolution.
