French composer, organist, pianist, and teacher (1845-1924) who was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. A neatly penned handwritten letter, in full (translated): “In thinking it over it became obvious that I have too much to do for this autumn; it would be imprudent to commission me with the Symphonie for [piano] 8 hands. Don't speak of it for the moment to your uncle, I beg you.” Faure adds a postscript: “It's not that it disgusts me!! but that it takes up too much room with what I've also undertaken at the moment.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 8.5 x 10.5.
