Description

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, November 18, 1920. Letter to his cousin Lucy M. Smith, in full: “Thank you warmly for your letter of last Saturday, signed by both yourself and Cousin Mary. It gave me the greatest pleasure, and I thank you both for it with all my heart. I particularly enjoyed the letter, because you have a faculty for stating my own thoughts in stating yours, and there is nothing to which one so cordially agrees as one's own thoughts. We have just had a visit from Nell and Margaret, and I am happy to report that they both seem unusually well, though I must say that Margaret looks a little worn and tired by the strenuous work she has been doing trying to get her voice in shape. All unite in most affectionate messages.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

This letter dates to roughly two weeks after the 1920 United States presidential election, which saw Republican candidate Warren G. Harding win in a landslide victory over Democratic long-shot James M. Cox. Wilson, who hoped to run for a third term in spite of his medical issues, was ultimately looked over by his fellow Democrats who opted for Cox and his running mate Franklin D. Roosevelt. Less than a month later, on December 10, 1920, Wilson was awarded the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize ‘for his role as founder of the League of Nations.’
