Description

ALS signed “M. Van Buren,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9.75, December 14, 1848. Handwritten letter to his former attorney general, Henry D. Gilpin, containing commentary on politicians in Washington and "Presidential questions." Addressed on the integral leaf in Van Buren's hand, and franked above: "Free, M. Van Buren." In fine condition, with a small repair to the integral address leaf, and a thin strip of old tape along the left edge. Gilpin served as attorney general in Van Buren's cabinet from January 11, 1840, to the end of his term on March 4, 1841.
