TLS signed “George Dewey,” one page, 8 x 10, Office of the Admiral letterhead, April 8, 1900. Letter to W. H. Hinrichsen of Jacksonville, Illinois, in part: "Regarding my visit to Jacksonville, I would say that we expect to leave Chicago on the morning of May 3, arriving at Jacksonville about 1:30 p.m., after luncheon. We shall be glad to see the gentlemen composing your invitation committee at Chicago to accompany us to your city…we would prefer a quiet trip and as little ceremony as possible. We shall travel by special train and no provision need be made by your committee for our transportation." In fine condition, with light creasing and soiling. Accompanied by a color 6.5 x 9.5 lithograph portrait of Admiral Dewey.
Dewey actually visited Jacksonville, Ill on May 1 (the second anniversary of his victory at Manila Bay) not on May 3rd as he anticipated. William H. Hinrichsen later served as Illinois Secretary of State and as a U.S. Congressman.
