Scarce document signed by the 1st African-American judge

African-American teacher, assessor, auditor, selectman, and Justice of the Peace (1746-1817); considered the first African-American elected to public office, the first African-American judge, the first archaeologist in New Hampshire, and the Revolutionary War patriot who rode north when Paul Revere rode west. Manuscript DS, signed “W. Cheswill, Jus. Peace,” one page, 7.5 x 2.5, December 14, 1811. Promissory note issued by Nathan Pike, who promises to pay Ephraim Fellows $1.17 on demand with interest. Endorsed and signed on the reverse by Wentworth Cheswill as the Justice of the Peace, who writes above, "Justices Court, Dec'r 14th 1811, Judgment for $1.22 Cents." In fine condition.
