Three items signed by Salmon P. Chase, including an early two-page ALS from 1831 signed “Salmon P. Chase,” a three-page ALS from 1851 as an Ohio senator signed “S. P. Chase,” and a DS as Ohio governor from 1856 signed “S. P. Chase.” The earlier handwritten letter, 8 x 9.75, November 1, 1831, addressed to Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn, discusses “a positive want of a new school of the highest order for young ladies,” as well as the “best route from Cincinnati to Boston”; the second letter, 8 x 10, April 7, 1851, addressed to his brother Edward, concerns financial interests in Lockport, New York, and concludes with a postscript about their alcoholic brother William Frederick Chase, who died the following year: “Give my best love to Sister Eliza. Will was here a few days ago—in hot water as usual”; and a partly-printed DS, one page, 11.5 x 9.25, October 28, 1856, appointing John C. Depew as “Captain of the Blue Light Artillery, Company 3d Brigade, 22d Division, O.V.M.” In overall very good to fine condition, with some scattered staining, toning, and creasing to the document.
