Incredible original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of John W. January by Bowman of Ottawa, Illinois, showing him seated with his missing feet and prosthetic legs. The reverse is imprinted with his autobiography, describing his capture while on the famous 'Stoneman's Raid' and subsequent battle with gangrene. When a surgeon refused to amputate his feet, January cut them off himself with a pocket knife. Remarkably, January survived the ordeal and lived until 1906. In very good to fine condition, with toned adhesive remnants across the top.
